C/CSM Jose Pazos-Garcia

Mission of the Mighty VOKS Battalion: “The Mighty VOKS Battalion provides an exceptional, culturally enlightened educational experience with values based on the development of confidence and competitiveness in all challenges of mind and heart in order to motivate students to become better citizens and developing their full potential in service and leadership.”

Honor Code: “Because I believe integrity is essential, I promise not to lie, cheat or steal.”

Mighty VOKS Battalion Motto: “DEEDS, NOT WORDS”

  • In December 2020, the VOKS Battalion adopted the motto of the 22nd Infantry Regiment - “DEEDS, NOT WORDS”.
  • The Cadets did this because they believe their ACTIONS should speak louder than our WORDS and to honor John “Jesse” Saldana who served with Hotel Company, 22nd Infantry, 4th Infantry Division during World War II.
  • Jesse was the first Cadet Battalion Commander of the Sidney Lanier High School ROTC, an honor student and All-City Basketball Guard.
  • 2LT Saldana was the lone survivor of his unit in Luxembourg and earned a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. On December 7, 1974 he was appointed San Antonio's first Hispanic Postmaster since 1836, and the first merit Postmaster in the nation.
  • His work ethic earned him the distinction of "Postmaster of the Year" in 1983.

The Traditional Army Junior ROTC Program

  • In 1964, Congress expanded the program to all military services and changed from active duty to shared support from the services and schools.

  • As congressionally mandated by Title 10 United States Code, Section 2031, each military service must have a JROTC program to "instill in students in United States secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, and personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment."

  • The JROTC program prepares students for real life by ensuring they are college, career or military ready.

  • This program teaches discipline, dedication and responsibility.

  • The program includes extra-curricular activities such as the Armed Drill Team, Unarmed Drill Team, Color Guard and many more.
